This is probably one of the questions I get the most as a gym owner, whether it be from a prospective client or just someone walking down the street hearing about CrossFit for the first time.
Every CrossFit gym is different but I’ll outline how we do things at CrossFit Auburndale.
When CrossFit was first conceived by Coach Glassman in 1996, he was training people 1-on-1. When he needed more hours in his day to train people, he eventually shifted them to a group setting but not until each individual was familiar with the fundamental movements of CrossFit.
As the popularity of CrossFit increased, people began to scramble to open gyms and cram them full of people hungry to learn about this CrossFit thing. Gym owners got creative with their intake processes and they varied from gym to gym.
Some gym owners carried on with training people 1-on-1. Others moved to group on ramps where there was a specific class for newbies that got them ready to participate in a full fledged CrossFit class. Some gym owners even threw caution to the wind and threw people into a group class without having ever touched a barbell before in their life.
We’ve tried all of these methods at CrossFit Auburndale and some have gone smoothly and other instances have been colossal train wrecks and we’ve probably had people leave feeling like CrossFit isn't for them.
As the gym matured, we shifted to a 1-on-1 prescriptive model. Everyone’s goals and needs differ and so that is why we start everyone off with a No Sweat Intro.
Regardless of age, skill level, or background, every prospective client of ours starts with an NSI. This is where we sit down 1-on-1 with you and ask you questions like why you’re interested in starting a new exercise regimen, what you’ve done in the past, and what you want specifically.
Fitness is not one size fits all and after your NSI, we can much better begin tailoring a program that fits your needs and lifestyle. At the conclusion of the NSI we will give you a prescription that will allow you to reach all of your health and fitness goals.
Everyone will start off with 1-on-1 training in some capacity but the degree of that will depend on the individual. Some people will only do four 1-on-1 sessions with one of our awesome coaches, others may start with eight and then decide that they love the 1-on-1 attention and just stay as a long term personal training client.
Starting 1-on-1 has been one of the best decisions we’ve made as it gives clients the best experience possible. It makes CrossFit much less intimidating and also allows them to maximize their time in the gym so they can get the best results possible.
